Recently, I purchased my first wig from Amazon. As a newbie to wigs, here are my thoughts on this affordable synthetic wig.

I have been watching wig reviews and installs on YouTube for probably a year. But, as a newbie to wigs, fear and inexperience held me back.
Eventually, about six months ago I purchased a wig from Amazon that was supposed to be a brown to golden blonde ombre. But, upon receiving it I was super disappointed. It was a red auburn that faded to golden blonde. And it was extra thick, overly shiny, and I couldn’t get a brush through it to save my life. It was atrocious.
I almost gave up altogether after that.
For years now, my hair has been about shoulder length. And it’s my own fault. I have repeatedly colored my hair dark and then a couple of months later decided to go platinum blonde. Dumb, I know.
And I’ve always been in awe of women with natural, waist-length hair. Currently, I’m {trying} avoiding coloring or bleaching my hair until we go to Tulum in June. Maybe longer if I notice my hair starting to actually grow.
Until then, I really wanted a way to change up my look and have fun with different hair colors. So, I decided to give wigs a try, again. This time paying more attention to details and reviews.
While I’m sure the higher-priced wigs are higher quality and require less time to prep, I want to dip my toes in first and test the waters before diving all in.
So, I headed to my number one online shopping resource. Amazon. I mean, what else would it be? I should honestly buy stock in Amazon with as much as I spend there.
If you have searched lace-front wigs on Amazon or synthetic wigs on Amazon, you know how many results there are. It’s overwhelming.
After hours of debate about what to get, I settled on a dark brown, 24″ lace-front wig from Lucyhair Wig, shown below.
I scoured the reviews. Everyone with images or solid reviews had purchased a colorful version of the wig. I didn’t find a single review on the dark brown option.
Still, I was feeling confident. The other reviews raved about how it wasn’t too thick or too shiny. It fit nicely and didn’t move around. So, I clicked the “place order now” button, as I have done hundreds of times before.
But, this time, I wasn’t nervous. I was confident that this would be the one.
Review of My Wig from Amazon
To start, this wig is available with Prime shipping. Mine still took about 4 business days to arrive, however.
It came nicely packaged in a plastic bag and was secured within a netted bag. Upon opening the netted bag, the hair felt very soft and didn’t appear to be tangled.
The one thing I noticed right away was the short part line. It only extends a few inches back and then looks like the hair has been brushed straight back. **Note: the image above is after plucking the part line. I will touch on this a little later in the review.
This wig has a center part. You cannot change the part on this wig. And you can’t really adjust the wig to fit more on the side because of the shape of the hairline and how it fits around the ear.
The part on the wig straight out of the bag is not the worst I have ever seen, but it definitely needed some plucking to make it look more realistic.
I learned how to pluck the part of the wig by watching YouTube videos. And because I’m still new to wigs, I don’t feel qualified to give instructions on how to do this.
I watched a few videos, but this one from AshGhotCakessTV on how to slay a cheap wig was the most helpful for me. She details and shows how to use tweezers or just your fingers to get a more natural part. She also explains how to fix a hairline if you overpluck it.
After plucking the hairline and a little around the face, and trimming the excess lace off, I was ready to put the wig on.
Installing the Lace-Front Wig
This wig comes with a wig cap. I purchased an additional pack of wig caps and nets. You can get a pack with both for a super affordable price, here.
The wig and the wig caps have a 22.5cm circumference. I have a fairly large head for a female, and after wearing the cap and wig for a day, I don’t feel that either were too tight.
This wig comes with 3 clips, one located on each side, and one just behind where the part ends. I only ended up using the two side clips because the top one sits on top of my wig cap.
Once I got it placed, it looked really good. I have a large forehead (five-head) and any expression I make typically involves the creasing of my forehead. Hello, wrinkles! So, when I would smile or lift my eyebrows the lace around my face would lift ever so slightly.
Also, the sideburn areas were slightly curled up and it was quite obvious, even from a distance.
I ended up using some eyelash glue to secure my wig all the way around my face. On that note, I will be ordering some Got2b Glued Blasting Freeze Spray to make things a little easier.
That being said, the lash glue worked really well to secure the edges around my face. Although, I attempted to pull the hair up into a bun on top of my head and that was enough tension to pull the wig away from my scalp.
Also, because of how strict the part is on this wig, you cannot brush the hair from the front of the head straight back. No matter what updo you attempt, the part will remain. This doesn’t bother me too much, but it is worth noting.
After getting everything set and in place, I brushed through the wig with a regular hairbrush. Just putting it on and moving it around a little did tangle the hair, but not to an extreme.
This wig from Amazon has a decent amount of shine to it, but I don’t think it’s unnatural or an instant giveaway that it’s a wig.
I wore this wig the entire day. To say it’s extremely comfortable would be a lie. But, I think the more you get used to the added weight, the light pressure from the cap, and the added heat from having your head covered, the less you will notice it.
I definitely will wear it again and again.
Which brings me to the next point.
Styling & Washing
As I mentioned above, I tried to get the wig into a messy bun and was successful, however, due to the lack of strength from the lash glue, it began to pull away at my hairline. But, once I have some stronger adhesive, I will be attempting more updos.
In the description on Amazon, it states that you can use heat styling tools on this wig up to 160º. It doesn’t state if this is in Celcius or Farenheit, but based on almost all the other heat-resistant synthetic wigs on Amazon, I would assume this number is Celcius. Which means you can heat it to 320ºF. But, don’t yell at me if you try and this ruins the hair.
Although it’s heat resistant, I will likely never try to use a heat tool on it. I’m not that ballsy and I honestly really like how straight it is.
Now, when it comes to washing this wig, the Amazon description says you can clean it every two weeks if you wear it often or if you only wear it once or twice 15 days after that.
However, it does not state how to do this. I did find this article on how to wash a synthetic wig and would recommend starting here.
Additional Tips
I highly recommend you grab either a wig stand that can accommodate a longer wig or a wig hanger that you can hang in your closet. I opted for the latter as it was quite a bit cheaper.
After a lot of research, I decided to put my concealer under the part of my wig instead of directly on top. This prevents the concealer from getting on the hair and being obvious.
Get some wig spray to condition the ends of your synthetic wig. You can purchase this on Amazon for around $10-$15.
If you get a wig that is a bit too shiny to pass as real, try using some baby powder on it. Use a makeup brush to apply a small amount of powder and then take it your kitchen sink to shake out any excess powder.
